10 ways to celebrate The Spring Equinox in the Southern Hemisphere

The Spring Equinox, also known as Ostara or Eostre, is the original Easter festival which we celebrate on September 23rd here in the Southern Hemisphere. Night and day are of equal length, the days are getting warmer, baby animals are everywhere, green shoots, blossoms and eggs are abundant. It is a time of transformation, rebirth, resurrection, fertility, conception and planting seeds.

Here are 10 ways to celebrate Ostara, The Spring Equinox:

1. Pick fresh Spring flowers

Fill vases in your home with kowhai, tulips, camellias, dandelions, daffodils, freesias and magnolias. If you're clever enough to grow these in your garden, pick them fresh or head down to your local florist and ask for a pastel Spring themed bouquet.

2. Wear Spring colours

Pastel colours and floral prints, dandelion crowns and fresh greenery. (This was my family in 2025 while I was pregnant with my daughter, wearing my favourite Dare Darla teal linen dress and wildflower crowns I made).

3. Dye or paint colourful eggshells

Colour them with food colouring, paint or natural kitchen scraps and spices. Hard boil them or make a hole in either end and blow out the raw egg inside, these can keep for as long as you take care of them. Place them in a little nest, basket, or hang them from an Ostara tree with colourful ribbons.

4. Eat egg themed foods

Meringue, chocolate eggs, omelettes, egg salad, devilled eggs. So many sweet and savoury options! Make the most of the abundance of eggs this time of year if you have your own chickens or buy them from a local market. (Find more Ostara inspired foods and drinks in this reel I made).

5. Sow seeds

An excellent excuse to go plant shopping or use seeds you saved from last season. At the Autumn Equinox a fun activity can be to collect seeds and save them in little labelled envelopes for the following Spring!

6. Play with baby animals

Notice which baby animals are around you and try to spend time with them if you can, enjoying their lively energy. Baby rabbits, chicks, lambs and calves are everywhere in Springtime.

7. Contemplate equality and balance

The theme of Equinox being day and night, light and dark, Sun and Moon all in perfect balance between Winter and Summer Solstice. Notice where in your life you need to find more balance.

8. Sing Spring themed songs

I've recently started printing out lyrics and making a folder of Spring themed songs to sing, mostly for myself and my kids, like they did at our Steiner playgroup. I also made an Ostara themed playlist to listen to during our celebrations.

9. Create a Spring Equinox altar

Adorn your altar with symbols of Spring such as flowers, eggs, bees, butterflies, snakes, rabbits, seasonal fruits and fresh greenery. (Notice the symmetry of my 2024 altar as the theme of Equinox is balance).

10. Create an Eostre egg hunt for children

I will be helping out with my first Ostara egg hunt for the children at my local playgroup. I am making chocolate bliss ball eggs (recipe incoming of course - if they are any good). I just think it is such a nice way to bring Easter traditons back into Springtime here in the Southern Hemisphere where we are supposed to celebrate it in Autumn -  which makes no sense seasonally.

Let me know how you will be celebrating this Spring Equinox in the comments...
