The Old Moon of July in the Southern Hemisphere
Share
The Old Moon is the name given to the Full Moon of July, in the Southern Hemisphere. Also known as the Quiet Moon.
It is a peaceful time before the growing and awakening energy of Spring begins to rise again from the ashes after Winter.
The Old Moon is about honouring the end of the cycle of the Goddess from Maiden to Mother to Crone, before she renews again at Imbolc, the beginning of Spring.
In Winter, as nature dies around us we often think about our ancestors and deceased loved ones at Samhain and during Yuletide. It's also an important time to check in and connect with our Elders who are still with us. Make sure they are warm and fed during the coldest months of the year.

The Old Moon is the end of Winter. Although it truly does seem to get even colder in New Zealand after the Winter Solstice, as snow now falls regularly up in the mountains. Still, the Spring flowers are already beginning to bloom here in the garden; daffodils, tulips and camellias.
I invite you to focus your Full Moon rituals around releasing the Old to make way for the New. Whatever that means to you. Maybe Spring cleaning, emptying the ash from your fireplace, sweeping away the cobwebs and dust in those forgotten corners of the house. Donating any unloved clothing and items you never use. Cleansing your home with Full Moon water or smoke and renewing your seasonal altars.

I adorned my Full Moon altar plate with white seasonal flowers from my garden to represent the coming Spring, as well as bones to symbolise Winter, all on a bed of ashes collected from my Yuletide fire. You can create your own Full Moon altar with whatever you find in nature around you, there is no right or wrong, but always ask the plants if you can pick from them.
You can make fresh Moon water by filling clear bottles or glasses of water outside or on a windowsill under the Full Moonlight. You can also charge any special objects with the energy of the Old Moon; such as jewellery or crystals, or your money. Ask your ancestors for guidance and strength in the coming Moon cycle.
I made the Old Moon Candle with a thin layer of white beeswax covering the black to create a grey, aged look. Perfect for your Full Moon rituals. Light your own special candle and write what you want to let go of on a bayleaf or a piece of paper and burn it. I use the candle flame to light it and then throw it in our fireplace. Watch the flames dance and imagine releasing whatever is holding you back.
