The Waking Moon of September in the Southern Hemisphere

The Waking Moon is the name of this Full Moon following the Spring Equinox in the Southern Hemisphere. It is a time of fertility, growth, renewal, resurrection and transformation. This Moon could also be known as the Hare, Rabbit, Egg, Lamb, Bee, Blossom, Budding or Greening Moon. You get the picture, these are all signs that Spring is here in full force.

Nature is awakening from it's Winter slumber, the weather is all over the place and you never know what you're going to get! But overall the Sun is shining more often now and the trees and flowers have started blooming and sending out fresh green shoots.

I love these beautiful magnolia flowers in my mother in law's garden. All of our fruit trees are blossoming, giving hope for the coming season when we will harvest our peaches, apples and plums. Everything truly does seem to be waking up right now!

Our Full Moon names were always based on what was happening seasonally around us, as a way to keep track of time when we actually lived in alignment with nature’s cycles of planting, growing, harvesting and resting. Therefore using Northern Hemisphere names for our Full Moons simply doesn’t make sense here in the Southern Hemisphere. Even in different countries, towns and local climates these seasonal markers will be slightly different. Many cultures will already have their own Moon names which may be appropriate for you to use. I believe we should name our local Full Moons, based on what we can see around us at this time of year.

I invite you to write down the plants you see growing, flowers that are blooming in your garden, animals being born, weather patterns around where you live currently and choose the theme for this Full Moon you most want to focus on. I have been doing this every lunar cycle and adding notes to my Southern Seasons Moon Calendar. It is helping me connect to nature and the seasons and will be interesting to look back on next year and see which pattens are the same.

Light your Full Moon candle (or any special candle) and write down what you are wanting to leave behind, then write down some action steps you can take to actually achieve this. Spring is a time of forward motion, hope and renewal. Either burn your note safely using your candle flame or put them somewhere you can see them and reflect on them later.
